SUMMARY:Aza Nizi Maza Art Exhibition Vernissage with Documentary Screening
DESCRIPTION:UA Days 2026 opens with an avant-premiere limited screening of Underground Garden directed by Yulian Ulybin \, a documentary about Aza Nizi Maza\, an art studio founded in Kharkiv. \nAt the centre of the film are children who continue to draw\, imagine\, and create while living under constant shelling. Through their voices\, the audience encounters the lived reality behind the works – a world where creativity stands against danger\, fear\, and disruption. \nAza Nizi Maza brings together children and teenagers who work collectively on large-scale artistic projects. One of the studio’s most significant works was created in 2022 in the Kharkiv metro\, where families were sheltering during intense shelling. \nThe evening begins with a short opening and a live online connection with the children in Kharkiv\, followed by the film screening. \nAn outdoor exhibition of works by the young artists of Aza Nizi Maza will be on view on the fence of the Czech Embassy from 23 May to 23 July. These works were created in real conditions of war. They also make visible another reality: that war is directed not only against territory and lives\, but against culture itself. \nOriginal title: Underground Garden\nAudio: Ukrainian\nSubtitles: English\nDirector: Yulian Ulybin\nGenre: documentary\nCountry/year of production: Ukraine / 2025 \n  \nRegistration

SUMMARY:"U are The Universe" screening
DESCRIPTION:U Are the Universe is a Ukrainian feature film by Pavlo Ostrikov\, developed over ten years of war and completed during Russia’s full-scale invasion. \nSet in the future\, the film follows Andriy\, a Ukrainian space trucker who believes he is the last human left in the universe after the Earth explodes. His isolation is interrupted by a message from a French woman\, Catherine\, which gives his journey a new direction. What unfolds is not only a science-fiction story\, but a reflection on distance\, vulnerability\, and the need for connection. \nThe film combines restraint\, humour\, and emotional precision. It focuses instead on the human condition – how meaning\, imagination\, and connection can persist even in isolation. \nAt the same time\, the film carries the reality in which it was made. It was developed during a decade shaped by war and completed under the conditions of full-scale invasion. Today\, several members of the film team are serving in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Lead actor Volodymyr Kravchuk watched the premiere from the trenches. \nThis context is not separate from the film. It is part of how it exists. \nU Are the Universe emerges from a context where filmmaking is inseparable from lived reality. It is part of a cultural process that continues despite disruption\, loss\, and danger. Rather than standing apart from these conditions\, the film exists within them — as a work shaped by its time\, its people\, and the circumstances in which it was created. \nFollowing its world premiere at TIFF\, the film received major international recognition\, including the Golden Octopus and the Silver Méliès in Strasbourg. \nThis screening invites the audience to engage with a work that exists both as cinema and as part of a wider reality – one in which culture continues\, even under fire. \nOriginal title: U Are the Universe\nDirector: Pavlo Ostrikov\nStarring: Volodymyr Kravchuk\, Daria Plakhtii\, Alexia Depicker\nAudio: Ukrainian\nSubtitles: English\nGenre: Science fiction\, comedy\, drama\nRuntime: 1 h 30 min\nCountry/year of production: Ukraine / 2025 \nBuy a ticket

SUMMARY:Art & Poetry Talk in Time of War
DESCRIPTION:This evening brings together a round table and poetry readings with participants working across literature\, cinema\, curatorial practice\, and cultural production\, connecting voices from Ukraine and across Europe. \nAt the centre of the conversation is the role of art in times of war: how it responds to violence\, carries memory\, and continues under pressure\, as well as its limits — what it can express or make visible when ordinary language is no longer sufficient. \nIryna Tsilyk is a filmmaker\, writer\, and screenwriter based in Kyiv. Her documentary The Earth Is Blue as an Orangereceived the Directing Award at the Sundance Film Festival and the Shevchenko National Prize. Working across documentary\, fiction\, and animation\, she explores everyday life shaped by war\, while her literary work and essays extend this perspective into a broader cultural and international context. \nIrena Karpa is a writer\, musician\, and public intellectual\, known as one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary Ukrainian culture. Her work moves between literature\, music\, and media\, combining directness\, irony\, and sharp social observation\, while engaging with themes of identity\, freedom\, and life during war. She is also активно involved in cultural diplomacy\, working between Kyiv and Paris. \nMarion Guth is a Luxembourg-based producer working across feature films\, documentaries\, animation\, and immersive formats. As co-founder of a_BAHN\, she develops internationally oriented projects that move between cinema and XR. Her work includes politically engaged productions such as Zero Impunity and the animated project Red Zone\, and reflects a sustained interest in how storytelling intersects with technology\, collaboration\, and contemporary political realities. \nMarta Czyż is an art historian\, independent curator\, and critic\, and curator of the Polish Pavilion at the 60th Venice Biennale. Her work focuses on contemporary art\, archives\, and the visual representation of conflict\, with particular attention to Ukrainian art and to how images and exhibitions shape the understanding of war\, memory\, and social change. In Luxembourg\, together with the Ukrainian collective Open Group\, she also presented the installation Repeat After Me II at Konschthal Esch\, on view until 20 September 2026. \nRadek Lipka contributes a perspective shaped by film curation and international cultural programming\, working at the intersection of cinema and public discourse. \nThe evening concludes with poetry readings by Philippe Schockweiler\, where the themes of the discussion take on a more direct and concentrated form. \nTogether\, the discussion and readings situate art within the conditions of war\, reflecting the central idea of the festival: culture continues under pressure and remains part of what is being defended today. \n  \nRegistration

SUMMARY:Resilience: Ukrainian Classics
DESCRIPTION:At its centre is pianist Marta Kuziy — a performer\, educator\, and cultural ambassador whose work moves between Ukraine and the wider European cultural space. Born in Lviv\, she began studying piano at the age of four and was trained within the Ukrainian classical tradition before continuing her artistic development in Poland. Her formation brings together strong academic grounding\, international experience\, and a sustained engagement with Ukrainian repertoire. \nOver the past years\, her work has taken on a particular focus. Returning to Ukraine in 2019 after more than a decade abroad\, she continues to perform internationally while actively contributing to cultural life within Ukraine. Alongside her concert activity\, she teaches and works with young musicians\, shaping a new generation for whom music is not only a profession\, but a way of thinking and responding to the present. \nIn this context\, her artistic practice reflects a broader condition. Ukrainian music today exists in a reality shaped by war\, where culture itself is under direct threat. Through her interpretations\, this music is not presented as heritage alone\, but as a living cultural language — one that preserves memory\, sustains continuity\, and remains present within the European cultural space. \nThe programme brings together works by Mykola Lysenko\, Viktor Kosenko\, Levko Revutsky\, and Nestor Nyzhankivsky. \nMykola Lysenko (1842–1912)\nA foundational figure of Ukrainian music\, Lysenko established a national compositional language rooted in both European form and Ukrainian musical tradition. His work laid the foundation for a cultural identity that continues to develop today. \nViktor Kosenko (1896–1938)\nKosenko’s music is marked by lyricism\, sensitivity\, and inner depth. His works bring an intimate and human dimension\, where expression remains precise and emotionally clear. \nLevko Revutsky (1889–1977)\nRevutsky works through restraint\, balance\, and inner tension. His music reveals a strength that emerges through structure rather than excess. \nNestor Nyzhankivsky (1893–1940)\nNyzhankivsky’s work engages with European compositional traditions while maintaining a distinct and individual voice. His music combines clarity\, structure\, and a strong sense of identity. \nTogether\, these composers present Ukrainian music as part of a broader European cultural space – not separate from it\, but formed in continuous dialogue with it. Their works remind us that this war is fought not only over territory\, but over memory\, identity\, and culture. \nAlongside the music\, the concert integrates the stories of Ukrainian cultural figures killed by Russia\, developed in collaboration with Killed Culture Makers. This creates a clear contrast between music that continues to be heard and voices that were deliberately silenced. \nThis concert presents Ukrainian classical music in the context in which it exists today – under the conditions of war. In a reality where Russia targets not only cities and lives\, but also culture\, music becomes a way to preserve memory\, maintain continuity\, and remain present. In this sense\, supporting Ukrainian music today is not only an act of solidarity\, but part of a broader commitment to protecting culture\, truth\, and freedom in Europe. \n  \nProgramme:\nMykola Lysenko (1842 – 1912)\n• Sonata in A minor\, Op. 16 – 21’\n• Concert Polonaise No. 2\, Op. 7 -7’\n• Second Rhapsody on Ukrainian Themes “Dumka–Shumka\,” Op. 18 – 7’ \nViktor Kosenko (1896 – 1938)\n• Étude\, Op. 8 No. 8 – 5’\n• Mazurka\, Op. 9 – 5’\n• Poem-Legend\, Op. 12 No. 1 – 2’ \nLevko Revutsky (1889 – 1977)\n• Song\, Op. 17 No. 1 – 3’\n• Preludes\, Op. 4 Nos. 1-2 – 4’ \nNestor Nyzhankivsky (1893 – 1940)\n• Prelude and Fugue – 5’\n• Waltz –  2’ \nBuy a ticket
